End of an Era: Old Pasir Ris Bus Interchange Bids Farewell After 36 Years
Pasir Ris, Singapore – 26 April 2025 — After 36 years of dedicated service, the old Pasir Ris Bus Interchange has officially closed, marking the end of an era for thousands of commuters who relied on it daily. Opened on 10 December 1989, the interchange at Pasir Ris Central was a vital transport hub, seamlessly linking bus services to the Pasir Ris MRT Station and nearby landmarks like White Sands Shopping Mall and Pasir Ris Town Park.
A Landmark Steeped in History and Culture
For over three decades, the Pasir Ris Bus Interchange stood as a symbol of community connectivity and urban growth. Its unique architecture, featuring oriental-styled roof trusses and cultural motifs representing Chinese, Indian, and Malay heritage, made it a recognizable icon in eastern Singapore.
Throughout the years, the interchange was enhanced with modern amenities such as:
- Real-time bus departure screens
- Upgraded lighting and CCTV surveillance
- Wheelchair-accessible boarding berths
These upgrades significantly improved commuter experience, while maintaining the historical essence of the interchange.
Transition to the Future: Pasir Ris Integrated Transport Hub (ITH)
In preparation for the new Pasir Ris Integrated Transport Hub (ITH), the original interchange was partially demolished and reconfigured on 3 July 2021. The western section made way for new developments, including the Pasir Ris Rail Turnback. An interim bus interchange was established, preserving the eastern side and adding:
- New end-on berths
- A dedicated BMT@Pasir Ris point for national servicemen heading to Pulau Tekong
- Modern cantilevered roofs offering improved ventilation and more spacious waiting areas
Essential facilities such as the Passenger Service Office, interchange offices, NTWU canteen, and public toilets were relocated to a newly constructed extension, ensuring continued convenience for commuters during the transition.
Final Farewell and a New Beginning
On 26 April 2025, commuters made their final trips from the old Pasir Ris Bus Interchange, sharing fond memories and emotions as they bid farewell to the beloved transport hub.
The very next day, on 27 April 2025, the brand-new Pasir Ris Integrated Transport Hub officially opened its doors. Designed to offer seamless connectivity between bus and rail services, the ITH promises a modern, fully air-conditioned environment that significantly enhances travel experiences for Pasir Ris residents and visitors.
Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future
While the closure of the old Pasir Ris Bus Interchange marks the end of a nostalgic chapter, the opening of the Pasir Ris Integrated Transport Hub signals a major step forward in Singapore’s commitment to modern, commuter-centric transport solutions.
The new ITH is set to transform daily commuting with its integrated services, better connectivity, and commuter-friendly facilities — ensuring that Pasir Ris remains a well-connected, vibrant town for generations to come.
